AG-CGT Aerogel Industrial Protective Coating is a high-performance water-based aerogel coating engineered for metal substrates across industrial and marine applications. Designed for thermal insulation and corrosion protection, it excels on chemical storage tanks, low-to-medium temperature piping, valves, offshore platforms, FPSO hulls, and industrial equipment operating within -40~120℃.With an ultra-thin 2mm system, it delivers 50% better thermal performance than standard reflective coatings and outperforms bulky 70mm rock wool insulation. It reduces tank internal temperatures by 5–10℃ or more, minimizes heat exchange and solar radiation impact, stabilizes stored media, and prevents corrosion under insulation in harsh marine and industrial environments.
AG-CGT Aerogel Industrial Protective Coating is a high-performance thermal insulation coating designed for metal substrates across industrial, marine and offshore applications. . Developed and manufactured by Shenzhen Aerogel Technology, the AG-CGT coating is the core insulation layer of our field-proven 3-layer tank thermal barrier system:
Anti-rust primer + Aerogel insulation coating + Protective topcoat
Unlike traditional insulation systems that rely on thick mineral wool and metal cladding, AG-CGT forms an ultra-thin thermal barrier directly on the tank surface, significantly reducing solar heat gain, internal temperature rise and evaporation loss of light oil products.
The coating uses nano silica aerogel and hollow glass microspheres as the main thermal insulation materials, combined with a water-based high-performance resin system. Once applied, it creates a continuous thermal barrier layer that reduces heat transfer from solar radiation, air convection and solid conduction.
AG-CGT is widely used in petrochemical storage terminals, LPG spherical tanks and refinery tank farms where temperature control, corrosion prevention and energy efficiency are critical.
The thermal insulation performance of AG-CGT coating mainly comes from the nanoporous structure of silica aerogel combined with the heat-blocking effect of hollow microspheres.
Silica aerogel particles contain a three-dimensional network of nano-scale pores (typically 20–50 nm). These pores are smaller than the mean free path of air molecules, which significantly reduces heat transfer through gas convection.
When dispersed in the coating matrix, aerogel particles and hollow glass microspheres form a multi-layer thermal barrier that:
suppresses air convection within the coating
reduces solid heat conduction
increases resistance to heat transfer
When used together with a high-reflective protective topcoat, the system can reflect a large portion of solar radiation and reduce heat accumulation on the tank surface.
This combination allows the coating system to effectively limit heat transfer into the storage tank during high-temperature conditions.
AG-CGT provides effective thermal insulation while maintaining a very thin coating structure.
The aerogel-based coating system typically has a thermal conductivity of 0.045–0.055 W/(m·K) at room temperature. With a total thickness of around 2 mm, the coating forms a continuous thermal barrier layer that reduces heat transfer from the tank surface.
Compared with conventional reflective cooling paints, aerogel insulation coatings provide more stable and long-term thermal resistance, helping reduce internal temperature rise and evaporation losses of light oil media such as:
gasoline
diesel
LPG
propylene
propane
The coating maintains stable performance in the temperature range of -40 °C to 120 °C, making it suitable for most medium- and low-temperature storage tanks.
Traditional tank insulation systems using rock wool or fiberglass often suffer from water absorption. Moisture trapped within the insulation layer creates conditions for corrosion under insulation (CUI), which is a major maintenance issue in petrochemical facilities.
AG-CGT coating forms a continuous and hydrophobic insulation layer directly on the steel surface, preventing water penetration and eliminating cavities where moisture can accumulate.
This integrated coating structure helps reduce the risk of CUI while maintaining long-term insulation performance.
The coating also shows good resistance to dirt accumulation and weather exposure, helping maintain surface integrity in outdoor industrial environments.
Conventional tank insulation systems are heavy and rely on mechanical supports, metal sheets and fasteners. Over time, thermal expansion, vibration or weather exposure can cause cracking or detachment.
AG-CGT coating eliminates these problems through a lightweight and flexible coating structure.
Key characteristics include:
Wet density ≤600 kg/m³
Only 1.5–2.0 kg material per m² required for a 2 mm coating thickness
Good flexibility to accommodate thermal expansion of the tank shell
Because the coating is directly bonded to the tank surface, risks of insulation layer detachment or falling panels are avoided.
Simplified Installation and Reduced Project Time
Traditional tank insulation systems require complex installation processes, including:
insulation layer installation
metal cladding
support structures
welding and drilling
AG-CGT coating significantly simplifies construction.
Anti-rust primer
Aerogel insulation coating
Protective reflective topcoat
The coating can be applied by airless spraying, trowel coating or scraping, allowing flexible construction methods.
Because the insulation layer is directly applied to the tank surface, the overall installation process is faster and safer, particularly for large storage tanks and elevated tank structures.
AG-CGT coating achieves UL94 V0 flame retardant rating, providing strong fire safety performance required in petrochemical environments.
The coating system is designed for long-term outdoor exposure and can maintain stable insulation performance for up to 10 years under normal operating conditions.
Compared with conventional cooling coatings that often require repainting after several years, the aerogel insulation layer provides more durable thermal protection and reduces maintenance frequency.
AG-CGT Aerogel Industrial Protective Coating is formulated as a water-based coating system.
Key environmental advantages include:
no volatile organic solvents
low VOC emissions
non-hazardous transportation classification
safe application in industrial environments
These characteristics help meet environmental and safety requirements in modern petrochemical and industrial facilities.

The construction is simple and convenient, requiring only 3-4 procedures by spraying. Compared with complex construction of traditional insulation materials, it greatly shortens the construction period and improves the construction safety factor, reducing overall construction costs.
It is tailored for petrochemical scenarios:
Targeted application: Suitable for thermal insulation of light oil tanks (gasoline, diesel) and spherical tanks (liquefied gas, propylene, propane) that require spray cooling in summer;
Anti-corrosion & hydrophobic: Good hydrophobic performance prevents corrosion of the insulation layer, adapting to the harsh petrochemical environment;
Flame-retardant & safe: Reaches UL94 V-0 flame-retardant rating, no self-ignition or fire-assisting phenomena, meeting petrochemical safety standards;
Temperature adaptation: Operates stably in the range of -40~120℃, coping with outdoor temperature fluctuations.
Low thermal conductivity: 0.045~0.055 W/(m·K) at room temperature, ensuring efficient heat blocking;
High thickness-efficiency: A 2mm-thick system improves thermal insulation effect by 50% compared with ordinary reflective insulation coatings;
Significant temperature reduction: Can reduce the internal temperature of storage tanks by more than 10℃, effectively reducing medium evaporation losses in summer.
Compared with 70mm-thick rock wool + aluminum layer (a common traditional solution), AG-CGT shows obvious advantages:
Better thermal insulation: It can further reduce the temperature by 5-10℃;
Ultra-thin design: Only 2mm thick, avoiding the risk of falling off caused by excessive insulation layer thickness;
Lightweight & flexible: With a dry density ≤230kg/m³, it reduces the load on tank bodies, and its flexibility and crack resistance adapt to tank deformation;
Simplified construction: 3-4 construction procedures only, shortening the construction period significantly compared to the cumbersome installation of rock wool.
