Pingding Grain Silo Retrofit: Aerogel Composite System Eliminates Condensation and Doubles Safe Storage Cycle

In August 2020, a grain depot in Pingding, North China, completed renovation of a 1,000㎡ single-story warehouse silo using a composite aerogel insulation system, specifically engineered to address the severe condensation and grain moisture problems caused by Pingding's extreme seasonal temperature range of -15°C in winter to 38°C in summer.The extreme temperature differential between winter and summer conditions drove persistent condensation on silo inner walls, causing grain moisture absorption, quality degradation, and significantly shortened safe storage cycles. Conventional insulation approaches had failed to adequately control wall surface temperatures across the full seasonal range, leaving the condensation problem unresolved and forcing the depot to accept reduced storage periods and elevated grain loss rates.A composite scheme combining aerogel insulation blanket with hydrophobic coating was applied to form a full-envelope thermal insulation system for the silo. The aerogel blanket layer provides the thermal resistance required to maintain wall surface temperatures above the dew point across the full seasonal temperature range, while the hydrophobic coating prevents moisture penetration through the insulation system from exterior humidity and precipitation.Post-retrofit monitoring confirmed the annual temperature difference inside the silo was controlled within 5°C, compared to the previous 53°C seasonal swing between ambient extremes. Condensation was completely eliminated across all interior wall surfaces throughout the year. The safe grain storage cycle was extended by more than two times compared to pre-retrofit baseline, directly improving storage capacity utilization and reducing grain loss from moisture-related spoilage. This project validates the composite aerogel system's effectiveness for condensation control in agricultural storage facilities facing extreme seasonal temperature differentials.
