This large-scale energy-saving renovation project covers seven old residential communities in Yangquan City, with a total construction area of 3 million square meters, making it one of the most extensive aerogel coating applications in China's residential building retrofit sector.The project adopts a multi-layer coating system tailored for two building envelope components. For exterior walls, the system consists of primer plus aerogel intermediate coat plus reflective thermal insulation topcoat, providing comprehensive thermal resistance and weatherproof protection across the entire facade surface. For roofs, the system adds a waterproof material layer between the aerogel intermediate coat and reflective topcoat, addressing the combined requirements of thermal insulation and moisture protection critical for flat roof retrofits in northern China's climate conditions.Post-construction testing confirmed excellent thermal insulation and waterproof performance across both application scenarios. The aerogel intermediate coat significantly reduces heat transfer through exterior walls and roofs, lowering interior temperature fluctuations and reducing heating and cooling energy consumption for residents. The reflective topcoat further reduces solar heat gain during summer, contributing to additional cooling energy savings. The integrated waterproof layer on roofs eliminated previous moisture infiltration issues that had affected upper-floor residents.The project has won wide recognition from local residents and building authorities, establishing a replicable model for large-scale aerogel coating application in old residential community energy renovation programs across northern China.
